Goals-set some

Returning to work requires you to set goals. But the goal, get a job, is daunting. Breaking this goal into smaller, managable steps makes progress easier and more measurable. For example, for me, the first step toward returning to work was to go back to school.
Here are some simple methods to help you set and achieve goals.
- Visualize and define exactly what you want. Be specific and break down the goals into smaller steps.
- Write it down. Your goals may change with time but write and update your goals regularly.
- Get started on your first step. Often this is the most difficult step.
- Figure out your obstacles and what may be holding you back. This could be your own self-doubt, procrastination or lack of determination. Change those habits and thought processes that are negative
- Surround yourself with supportive people who understand your goals and believe in you. Ditch the naysayers or at least ignore them.
- Keep track of your progress. If you are having a difficult time motivating yourself to complete step 3. Go back and review steps 1 & 2 and remind yourself what you have already done.
- Estimate the time involved and make realistic plans to complete each step. Write it down.
When I got serious about returning to work I brainstormed every step involved in the process and made a huge list including big goals (get into graduate school) and little goals (buy a new suit for interviews.) Try to break all of the big goals into little goals. This process not only helps you reach your goals, it also is a valuable time and project management skill.
